How Many CCTV Cameras Does a Small Business Need?

Most small businesses need roughly 6–12 cameras, but square metres alone cannot produce the right count. Entrances, tills, stock, perimeter and identification points each need a defined visual outcome.

Short answer

A compact shop or office often lands around 6–8 cameras; a larger business with stock rooms, rear access and parking may need 9–16. Count security objectives and capture points—not rooms—and use separate overview and identification views where one camera cannot do both jobs well.

Camera count begins with the incident you need to resolve

‘Cover the shop’ is not a testable requirement. A better brief asks whether staff need to detect after-hours movement, recognise a regular visitor, identify an unknown person at the entrance, verify cash handling, read a number plate or reconstruct movement between rooms.

The required detail determines lens, distance, angle and lighting. A wide camera that shows an entire floor may not place enough pixels across a face at the door. That is why a dedicated capture camera often sits beside an overview camera.

Walk the business from public approach to the most valuable asset. Every camera should have one primary job, even if it also provides useful secondary coverage.

Three small-business planning profiles

A compact shop with one entrance, one till, one open floor and a stock room may start with six cameras: entrance identification, front approach, till, two floor views and stock access. A professional office with reception, corridors, server room and parking may use eight to twelve. A warehouse with loading, aisles and perimeter can move beyond sixteen quickly.

Do not force the design into an eight-channel recorder because eight sounds standard. If the survey identifies eight cameras today, a 16-channel NVR can provide sensible expansion and avoid replacing the recorder when one blind spot appears later.

Image usability depends on more than megapixels

Resolution without enough subject pixels, correct shutter, good light and sensible angle does not create evidence.

Test day, night and backlit conditions. Use wide-dynamic-range capability at bright entrances, infrared or appropriate lighting where needed, and avoid aiming infrared through glass. Privacy masks and access controls should be planned for neighbouring property and staff-sensitive areas.

  • Mark camera direction and field of view on a floor plan.
  • Capture test clips from the final mounting position.
  • Confirm faces remain usable when people wear caps or approach from the side.
  • Document retention, user access, export and time synchronisation.

Recorder, storage, network and power complete the system

Camera quantity sets the minimum NVR and PoE port count, but bitrate, codec, frame rate, activity and retention determine storage. Motion-only recording can save capacity but must include enough pre-event and post-event footage to explain what happened.

Back up cameras, PoE switch, recorder, router and any display required during an incident. Local recording should continue if the internet fails; remote viewing is a separate dependency. Keep admin accounts unique, update firmware and test video export before an emergency.

Frequently asked questions

Are four cameras enough for a small shop?

They may provide basic entrance, till and overview coverage, but rear access, stock and blind spots are often missed. Map each required outcome before accepting four as sufficient.

Is one 360-degree camera better than four cameras?

It can be excellent for overview in the right environment, but it may not provide identification detail at entrances or tills. Wide context and tight capture are different jobs.

How many days should CCTV be stored?

Choose retention from incident discovery time, business risk, policy and any applicable legal requirements. Then calculate bitrate-based storage with overhead and test actual recording settings.
